Airtel Uganda Launches Starlink Satellite-to-Mobile Service

Airtel Uganda has launched Starlink satellite-to-mobile connectivity, making Uganda the second African market where Airtel Africa has commercially introduced the service after the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The service allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile network in areas beyond the reach of Airtel’s terrestrial coverage. Customers do not need a satellite dish, external antenna or separate device, but must have a compatible handset and a clear view of the sky.

Initial capabilities are focused on SMS and light-data applications such as WhatsApp messaging. Eligible Airtel Uganda customers can register through the MyAirtel app for a free 30-day trial, after which the service will be available through eligible data bundles.

Airtel is positioning the service as a complement to its terrestrial network rather than a replacement. Target users include remote communities, transport and logistics operators, humanitarian organisations, health workers, farmers, mining operations and others working in areas where conventional infrastructure is difficult to deploy.

The launch also adds a resilience layer for emergencies, natural disasters and temporary network disruptions, where satellite-to-mobile connectivity can provide basic communications if terrestrial networks are unavailable.

Uganda’s regulator has indicated that technology-neutral licensing allows operators to use satellite as well as terrestrial infrastructure to meet coverage obligations. Mobile operators are required to reach at least 90% geographic coverage, including challenging terrain such as islands, forests, mountains and other hard-to-reach areas.

The rollout follows Airtel Africa’s wider strategic partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink Direct-to-Cell services across its markets. Airtel has already tested the technology in Kenya and launched commercially in the DRC, with Uganda now becoming the next step in a broader African expansion.
